Q: What is the Evolved Athlete?

The Evolved Athlete provides a fully integrated sports performance training program aimed at creating better athletes. I train for pure athleticism as measured by speed, power, agility, reaction, endurance, and quickness.  It is the culmination of science and application drawing upon nearly two decades of coaching and playing sports and extensive academic research.  Evolved Athlete is the concept that in every sport there are those athletes who have figured out how to evolve their game to a whole new level.  My training is focused on helping athletes reach their full potential and unlock their greatness…in us all is the ability to evolve our game, I just help you get there.

Q: How do you train your Athletes?

I accomplish results by applying a training program which progresses from developing sound basic fundamental movements to more dynamic and complex training exercises. During training, the focus on correcting and re-correcting fundamentals assures that I am tapping into your true athleticism as well as preventing future injuries through physiologically correct movements.  Layered in are workouts that focus on building gladiator strength and warrior power…in other words, we don’t lift weights in a sterile environment, we train like warriors in very sport-specific workouts and environments.  This allows you to translate your training more easily to the game

Q: What Equipment will I Train with?

Equipment? You really don’t need equipment to become a better athlete.  You cannot use the equipment during the game so why become reliant on it during training?

Look, to be perfectly honest, athletes are soft today and we have equipment and shortcuts to blame.  They spend too much time in static environments doing fake workouts that do not translate to their actual sport  What I teach you cannot be learned in some 20 hour course from the ACE…it is 30 years of playing sports, 20 years of coaching it, and a handful of years spent in the lab.  It translates directly to sports because it was designed by an athlete for athletes.

I just completed work with a pro baseball player who, in 10 weeks, never did a true weight room workout…in fact I refused to take him inside the club because I did not want it to make him soft by not learning sports power. He can also count the pieces of “equipment” we used on one hand…At first he was not keen on the idea of no weight room work.  When he got to Spring Training and heard all the comments about how powerful he was playing he was a believer.  It is not about how good you look in a swimsuit, it is about how powerful you are in game…oh, but the side effect is a much more natural looking strength.  I think athletes are more symmetrical and look a lot better than gym rats.

If you want equipment, leather couches, cardio theater, wi fi, and a juice bar go join a local gym but be sure to translate what you do there to the field or else it is just fitness and not sport training.

If I do use equipment it is as assistance in the process and not as crutches. I believe strongly in building athletes where they play, on the field, and therefore try not to get them reliant on devices that do not translate to play. Devices are features of a program, but the benefits are the results I get with athletes. If I can get you those results without using special equipment, the translation to the field is that much more correlative.

Q: What sports benefit from this?

Due to my philosophy of building better overall athletes, you will see an increase in ability in virtually all sports.

I have experience playing, coaching, and training athletes in football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, track and field, wrestling, rugby, golf, and multi-sport endurance athletes.

No matter your sport, if you are committed to evolving your game to your greatest potential, contact me.  If I have not played or coached it, we will both be pioneering new techniques and making you stand out in a crowd.

Q: What ages do you work with?

The Evolved Athlete is targeted towards two different ages of athletes. Beginning at age 7 and continuing until age 17 I believe in working on solid fundamentals and mechanics to fully train the body in the correct movements for the safest and most effective workouts. These ages are the sweet spot for athletes: best time for mechanics development, proper muscle growth, bone density growth, confidence building, and skill acquisition.  Training at this age is imperative mentally and physically…it will reduce burnout and injuries in the future and ensure your kid is playing at his or her best for years to come.

Beginning at age 18 I feel like the Athlete is ready to progress to working on the specific parts of his/her game to fine tune it to a collegiate level. At this stage I can adequately assess what improvements an athlete needs to make to become a superior competitor and structure very specific training programs that help you dominate your game.

For instance, if you are a baseball player with blazing speed and great skill, but tight hips, my program would be designed to continue to enhance your speed while opening up your hips with flexibility and rotational power work.  That way I can send you away as a threat at the plate as well as on the base paths.

Q: What type of training is sport performance…what do you do to train us differently than in a gym?

Sport Performance Training is targeted at training your body so that you can compete at the highest level possible. Unlike in a gym setting where you spend your time doing isolated exercise, sometimes taught by people with little or no sport background, sport performance training will train you how to use your muscles at the same time, just like in real game situations, taught by people who have played, coached, and studied sport movements. Sport Performance specialists know exactly what you are going through as an athlete and respect your individualism…we don’t give you a canned “fat loss” workout, we create a program designed to help you succeed. The aim is to train you to move properly to enhance your athleticism, while building in power.

The Evolved Athlete looks at sport performance from a “whole machine” perspective too.  I understand the mental and spiritual dynamics at play as well as the nutritional and physiological sources for success.  I give you as much advice about your mental skills and your diet as I do about your game skills and your training.  My goal is take all the factors that make athletes great and teach you to translate it during games.  Like learning a language in a lab, sooner or later you have to walk the streets and talk it…sport training should be geared toward making you talk the talk as best as you can.

I train athletes in multi-plane, dynamic movements that mimic the actual games you play. I use body weight and plyometrics, I focus on building the core, and most importantly, refining movement patterns. Great athletes are not built in labs and in gyms, they are honed there. Great athletes are made on the field of play and that is where I train you.

Q: What are the different training programs you offer?

Evolution Sport Performance: This is my flagship offering. The rigorous training program is geared to athletes who want to be more than better, they want to transcend the game. I spend the bulk of the time correcting and refining movement patterns and building power systems. My  goal is to give you the tools and training to evolve your game.  Workouts are typically done in a periodized format becoming more specific in sport nature near the end so that I send you into your season firing on all cylinders.

Workouts should be done several times per week and would vary based on the progression (strength, power, speed, agility, endurance are all examples of the focus of a typical workout).  I am a big believer in natural training, so if you do use “equipment” it is a ball, a kettlebell, or ladders and cones.  I put you in situations that are specific to sports and specific to natural body movements….I am still trying to find the sport other than power lifting where an athlete lies on his back and presses 200 pounds straight up from his chest (so I don’t make you bench press much in my workouts).
Endurance Training: This program will build your endurance so that you can continue functioning at your maximum level for longer periods of time. I  will train you to run Triathlons and Marathons and compete better in longer more demanding races.  Interestingly, many successful endurance athletes are turning to the training provided by guys like me because of the efficiency it creates in their movements, the energy system benefits, and the power translation to their performance.  If you are willing to continue your distance work on your own, this training will add that extra spice to your recipe for success…being powerful and efficient can only help during those 26.2 miles.

Golf Sport Performance: I will teach you the proper movements and rotations to maximize your distance and accuracy. My tested training program works on your mechanics and strength to give you the game you’ve wanted. I partner with teaching professionals to ensure that the physical enhancements the training provides lines up with your swing and skill. As an added benefit in this program, I use my mental skills coaching to work with the golfers to develop greater mental skills for superior performance.

As we watch PGA golfers turn more and more to a team of coaches (mental, fitness, skill) it only makes sense that the rest of us would want the same training when we step on the practice range.  Why should Tiger Woods have all the fun?

Q: Do you work with private groups or teams?

Yes I do. I prefer teams and groups.  More can be done with multiple athletes (competition, partner exercises) and training multiple athletes from one team translates to overall better team performance. Call about rates and specific coaching questions.

Q: Who are some of the athletes or teams you have worked with?

Some of our/my recent clients include Santa Fe High School Soccer, Gainesville Soccer Alliance u-17 team, some University of Florida legends, former NCAA Semi-Final Soccer players, a current Kansas City Royals athlete, an International Olympic Competitor, and more.

My manager and I recently reviewed my history and we realized that I have worked with 20,000+ athletes in 12,000+ training hours over 18 years.  Some I coached, some I trained, some I taught specific skill-acquisition, but all of them were athletes looking to evolve their games.

I have nearly 2 decades of working with youth athletes at all phases and levels of the game, and am a leading expert in youth coaching methodologies. Whether you are seeking gold or wanting to score your first goal in the YMCA league, I know your needs and I know how to coach you to succeed.

Q: How Much Does it Cost?

Contact me…I like to train an athlete once or twice before I talk price…this training is not for everyone, so you have to test drive it first.  If you are buying a used Yugo, a test drive is not necessary.  This kind of training is like buying a Ferrari…you better like how it feels behind the wheel before you spend the money.

If you don’t like it, you can always do personal training or train on your own.

I am also in high demand so I am choosy about who I train.  Sorry, but I have a family of three kids and an awesome high energy wife so time is valuable to me.
